Self-Portrait

for four iPads and PPIIEL

This piece was written for the ensemble Line Upon Line for the 2020 Winter Composer Festival. More than a piece Self-Portrait is a a performance frame that allows for players to make music using preselected sound sources. The samples can be literally anything and players are encouraged to select audios that are meaningful to them and that will faithfully recreate a sonic portrait of themselves. This version of the piece has three movements in which I explore three different ways to make music as an ensamble: Movement 1 is intended as a framed improvisation where performers are given some instructions of what to do. Movement 2 is the most precisely notated one and has a fixed and thought through structure. Movement 3 is an open interpretative improvisation.
