Danzas Tórridas

Sinfonietta (2014)

Written for and premiered by Alarm Will Sound for the Missouri International Composers Festival 2014.

For this piece, I went out of my comfort zone and decided to do something I had never done before (but always wanted to do). I wrote a piece that had a strong Latin vibe, not as a suggestion but something more direct and frontal. Dancing is a huge part of many cultures in Latin America, I was born and raised in Cali, Colombia the so-called “The Salsa Capital of the World,” so this genre has been with me from the beginning.

I believe that popular music is as important as classical music and part of the challenge is to work around the border lines amongst them. This is an intimidating exercise, but after this piece, I felt like I was left with a wider and more fresh palette of compositional resources.
