Drawing upon first-hand accounts, journalistic reports, and excerpts from the Colombian Constitution, the work unfolds across four movements that juxtapose idealism, violence, grief, and hope. Rather than presenting a political argument, the subject is approached through the lens of lived experience and personal reflection. The work seeks to illuminate the fragile traces of humanity that endure amid violence and upheaval – Brent Baldwin (Conductor of the premiere)

“Voces Olvidadas is ultimately about the persistence of human dignity during unimaginable circumstances. Through music, I wanted to explore the emotional realities surrounding these events — not as political rhetoric, but as a human story.” – José Martínez

This was a project that started in 2016 and was only premiered 10 years later for many reasons. This piece was my first serious foray into choir writing and it took me a lot of time to feel confident with this. Movement IV works as a piece of its own and it was done in Spring 2025 by the chamber choir at Colby College. The original version with ensemble requires more moving parts and a lager budget. Finally, in 2026, thanks to the support from New Music USA, Colby College, and The Universalist Unitarian Church of Austin, conductor and friend Brent Baldwin premiered the piece. Below, you find videos of both premieres and some pics of rehearsals.

Premiere of the IV movement by Colby Collegium (2025) – Conducted by Neviton Barros

For choir and pierrot ensemble (also available with piano reduction) Voces Olvidadas is a large-scale work examining the kidnapping of military personnel during the Colombian conflict of the 1990s.
