{"id":1462,"date":"2026-03-27T16:40:54","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T20:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/josegmartinez.com\/?page_id=1462"},"modified":"2026-03-27T16:43:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T20:43:59","slug":"sinsentido-del-absurdo","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/josegmartinez.com\/es\/sinsentido-del-absurdo\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinsentido del Absurdo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">For four-hand piano, electronics, and video<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned by the HOCKET duo for their project <em>Photoplay Music: New Works for the Silent Film Era<\/em>, presented by Piano Spheres in Los Angeles, this work serves as a reimagined soundtrack for Man Ray\u2019s 1928 film <em>L\u2019\u00c9toile de Mer<\/em>. Similar to the film, the score embraces Dadaist principles, specifically the use of absurdity, collage, and &#8220;ready-made&#8221; objects. The absurd is realized through the juxtaposition of Afro-Colombian <em>cumbia<\/em> with Dadaist cinema, two worlds that otherwise would not meet. The collage element is reflected in my eclectic aesthetic that, among others, draws from post-tonal harmonies, extended piano techniques, and improvisatory passages to mirror the film\u2019s abstract narrative. Finally, the use of ready-made materials is explored through samples of the album <em>Amistad<\/em> by Colombian American group <em>Wache<\/em>. Here, I am recontextualizing the sound of the <em>gaitas y tambores<\/em> tradition within an entirely new sonic landscape.
